Brightness Constancy

Because we cannot see color in the dark we are able to perceive that the color of objects do not change when lighting changes.
The cones in our eyes allow us to see that the shirt on the left appears to be white while the shirt on the right is gray. However, we are able to perceive that the shirt has not changed color but rather, the lighting has changed.
